The Big Plastic Debate, Packaging Innovations 2018, The Rt Hon John Gummer, Lord Deben

Two things really important to Politicians:

a) Any action taken has to work and be shown to work!

b) Any action taken can’t upset the Daily Mail readership! (bit tongue in cheek)

Two new initiatives forthcoming:

a) Single use plastic tax to be announced in the Autumn budget! STAEGER RESPONSE: OUR PET IS MADE FROM RECYCLED BOTTLE FLAKE AND CAN TRAVEL THROUGH THE RECYCLING SYSTEM 7/8 TIMES BEFORE NEEDING IV TREATMENT, TO ALLOW IT TO CARRY ON, SO IT IS NOT SINGLE USE!

b) Waste & Resource Action committee (Producer Responsibility) to review the PRN and PERN system. It will report back before Christmas with their recommendations! (hopefully to make the exporting of waste plastic less advantageous). It is likely that all costs associated with recovering plastic, from households through to the plastic recyclers, will be incorporated in the PRN/PERN system! This will increase the cost for each compliance system! STAEGER RESPONSE: IT IS HOPED THAT THE FACT WE USE SUSTAINABLE PLASTIC WILL BE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION WHEN THE COSTS ARE ALLOCATED, WE ARE THE GOOD GUYS!

Special points of interest:

Overriding principle of the changes is that is does not hurt the good guys, the firms committed to using PCW in their plastic i.e. a good percentage of recycled plastic! (SEE ABOVE)

Stop and go rubbish to be collected in a far more efficient way. The enemy of the public waste collection system is no bins at all in public places and even worse if they are there, they are full to brimming!!

The Councils must be coerced into having a uniform waste collection system. Mr Eric Pickles view point that it would depower local Councils to have this decision making taken away is not helpful!

A well understood and clear system that would help consumers to know what was recyclable and what was not.

A more balanced viewpoint to be taken over incineration, it has a place!

Every business , with no exceptions, that employs people must provide recycling facilities

Ian Jamie asked about Europe and would they be operating under the same conditions as the UK? The answer was yes, in theory under the climate change legislation?

After Lord Deben departed the debate carried on with OPRL, Wrap and Veolia participating. The discussion centred around creating a first class recovery system for plastics, grade A quality for each polymer recovered! Ian Jamie asked the question about the eventual destination for this Grade A plastic. Would it all be exported abroad with all the attendant risks of it being tipped into the rivers or would we build more plastic recyclers here, i.e. we need more infrastructure, supported by Government?
