Littering problem in the UK

Share

I was walking my dog Wally yesterday in Wappenbury Woods (nr Leamington Spa) and halfway round I decided to sit on a stump and listen to the bird song. I felt totally at peace and then I wrecked it by looking down. At my feet were a discarded yoghurt pot and a full dog pooh bag. Any feeling of Bonhomme to the world soon vanished and it was replaced by anger. “Why do people leave their rubbish lying around? What is going on?”

The Sunday Times ran an article on March 28th this year titled “Britain’s a world leader in rubbish, it’s up to us to pick up the pieces” It said, that about 30 million tonnes of litter are dropped every year with half a billion pounds spent each year cleaning up the streets.

The amount of litter dropped has gone up 500% since the 1960s and 48% of people admit to having contributed to the problem. Over 122 tons of cigarette butts and cigarette-related litter is dropped every day. Jeremy Paxman said, “This is a beautiful country and we treat it as a rubbish dump? What is it with the British? It didn’t use to be like this”. A Parliamentary committee suggested England was the most littered country in the western world!

A plea to anyone reading this, especially my readers in Cheltenham, let us all help to stamp this anti-social behaviour out. But also please stay safe. There is only so much you can do.
